President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto visit the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals complex in Lekki, Nigeria, ahead of the planned September 30 groundbreaking for an East African refinery in Lamu.
The proposed Lamu facility is designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day. Plans also include a special economic zone and a 1,000-megawatt power plant, with the aim of making Lamu a regional centre for fuel supply and industry. The groundbreaking would mark the start of a project whose financing, construction and local benefits will need to be followed closely.
The visit comes as Dangote opens ownership of its Nigerian refinery to public investors. Its initial public offering opened on September 14, so the IPO is underway rather than upcoming.
